ππ HUMPBACK WHALES OF SAMANA BAY
Every year, a magnificent spectacle of nature arrives in our beautiful Samana Bay: the impressive humpback whales. πβ€οΈ
During the winter months, these whales undertake an incredible migration from the cold waters of the North Atlantic, including areas of Canada, Newfoundland, Labrador, and other northern regions, to the warm waters of the Caribbean.
Why do they come to Samana? π΄π
The whales seek warmer, calmer waters to reproduce, mate, and give birth to their calves. The mothers need a favorable environment for their young to be born and begin their early stages of life. In SamanΓ‘ Bay, mothers with their calves have been observed especially in waters close to the shore.
π Here, a true miracle of nature unfolds:
β€οΈ Whales arrive to breed.
π³ Some mothers give birth to their calves.
πΆ The males perform their famous songs.
π The mothers teach their young to swim and survive.
βοΈ After spending the winter in the Caribbean, many return to the northern waters to feed.
The main whale-watching season in Samana is from January to the end of March, although some whales can be seen during April.
The Dominican Republic is one of the most important places in the Caribbean for these whales. The largest concentration is found in the Silver Bank and Navidad Bank, while Samana Bay is also an important breeding and calving area.
